Michael Douglas Rice, age 81, passed away quietly on January 29, 2026, just like he lived his life. Michael was born in Benzonia, Michigan on December 17, 1944 to Lindsey and Myrtle (Worden) Rice but lived in Portland for the last ten years. He will be remembered for his baked goods, bread making, his famous fudge and his woodworking. His wood shop was his happy place, and he enjoyed creating projects for others. I was recently informed that three local women were preparing for a trip to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. While the timing didn’t work out to get something published before the trip, I was able to connect with climber Susan Blemaster after she returned home. On Thursday, the Portland Raiders traveled to Lucky Strike in Grand Rapids for the Regional Championship.
