Raider softball gets two wins over St. Johns, Wins District Championship

The Lady Raiders traveled to St. Johns on Tuesday.
In game one, the Raiders won 6-2. Portland tallied 14 hots in the game. Madison Daggett led the offense with four hits. Bella Spitzley, Lilly Thelen, Rylee Miller, Brynn Nelson and Veda Smith each had two hits for Portland. Molli Miilu got the win in the circle going seven innings and striking out eight.
In game two, Portland won 10-8. Thelen led the Raider offense with three hits and four RBIs. Miilu and Kameryn Burnhams each added two hits. Spitzley got the win in the circle striking out three over seven innings.
On Saturday the Raiders traveled to Ionia for their district contests.
In the semi-finals, Portland topped Charlotte 12-0. The Raiders out hit the Orioles 10-1. Spitzley, Miller, and Burnham each had two hits. Miilu got the win in the circle striking out six.
In the district finals, the Raiders defeated Lakewood 9-3. Willa Almy had three hits. Miilu had two hits and two RBIs. Thelen had two hits and four RBIs. Spitzley struck out four over seven innings in the win.
After districts, Portland Head Coach Brandee Novara told the Beacon, “We played great defense against Charlotte and hit the ball well to get us to the championship game. Championship game started slow, we had some mental errors but the girls kept fighting and never gave up. We picked it up defensively, and had some clutch base hits to keep the rally going. I am very proud of this team and all the adversity we overcame throughout the season.”
The Raiders will start regional play on Saturday, June 6th at 10:00 AM when they face Grand Rapids Christian at Hudsonville Unity Christian.
