John Hubert Fryover, of Portland, passed away surrounded by his loving family on January 3, 2026 at the age of 76. John was born in Portland on January 9, 1949 the son of Herbert and Mary (White) Fryover.
John was a proud graduate of Portland High School, Class of 1967, where he excelled as a standout athlete in both track and football. Following high school, John proudly enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during the Vietnam War. A dedicated and proud veteran, he remained deeply connected to his fellow service members throughout his life. John was an active member of V. F. W. Post #4090 in Portland, where he previously served as both Post Commander and Chaplain. John dedicated 38 years of service to Fisher Body before retiring. Outside of work, he enjoyed fishing and most of all, spending time visiting with others. John had a gift for making friends wherever he went and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His kindness, generosity, and easygoing nature will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Preceding John in death are his parents; brother, Theron Fryover; sister, Barbara Otterman; and father-in-law, William Nurenberg. Surviving are his beloved wife of 36 years, Annette (Nurenberg) Fryover; daughters, Shannon Fryover, Nicole (Jason Harns) Argue, Kayla Lafata, Andrea Fryover, and Lindsey Fryover; grandchildren, Sean, Connor, Paighton, Parker, Vincent, Liam, and Adrianne; great-granddaughter, Everly; siblings, Diane (Robert) Millis and Dale (Patty) Fryover; brother-in-law, Dennis Otterman; mother-in-law, Agatha Nurenberg; Nurenberg in-laws, Barb (Scott) Nurenberg, Patrick (Robin) Nurenberg, Joe Nurenberg, Dan (Kim) Nurenberg, Robert (Stacey) Nurenberg, Rick (Melissa) Nurenberg, Diane (Chris) Zinser, Dave (Mandy) Nurenberg, Mark (Lisa) Nurenberg, Kathy (Jason) Marvin, Terry (Nicole) Nurenberg, Scott Nurenberg, Brian Nurenberg, Kurt (Kim) Nurenberg, and William (Andrea) Nurenberg; many nieces and nephews; and several special friends.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 from 4-8 p.m. at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge Street, Portland.
The Funeral Service will be officiated by Pastor Jacob Richards at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 8, 2026 at the First Congregational Church, Portland. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Portland Cemetery. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Portland V. F. W.
