Obituary for Donald Leo Schafer


Donald Leo Schafer, age 80, of Eagle, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2019. He was born on May 21, 1938, the son of Alfred and Caecilia (Schneider) Schafer. Donald was a lifetime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and was incredibly strong in his faith and devotion to God. Donald was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a very fruitful gardener and hobby farmer, most recently raising chickens. Donald enjoyed traveling, camping and hiking, especially in one of his favorite places, Cadillac, Michigan. He and his wife, Pauline, shared the hobby of going to the casinos in Las Vegas every year for the past 30 years. Donald was also a lover of good music, specifically classic country songs. Most of all, he loved and adored his family and cherished the time he had spent with them.

Preceding Donald in death are his parents, brothers, Marvin, Frederick, Stephen, Clarence, and Alvin Schafer; sisters, Esther and Marie; Pung in-laws; and brothers and sister-in-law, Richard (Judy) Pung and Paul Pung. Donald is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Pauline (Pung) Schafer; daughters, Brenda (Steve) Rogers, Bev (Mike) Gross, and Pam (Richard Park) Schafer; grandchildren, Joshua (Rachel) Rogers, Tyler (Lexi Bell) Rogers, Jason (Natalie) Gross, and Justin Gross; great-granddaughter, Emma Rogers; siblings, Irene Lischkge, Bertha Roggenbuck, Mildred (Art) Schafer, Dorothy Trierweiler, Rita Bashore, Justin (Frieda) Schafer; Schafer sister-in-laws, Marie Schafer, Mary Schafer, Cathy Schafer, and Joyce Schafer, Pung in-laws, Mary Theresa (Mike) Gross, Helen (Lavern) Carr, Roger Pung, Peter (Connie) Pung, and Dennis (Julie) Pung; and many special nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Mike Alber at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland. Rite of Committal will follow at North Eagle Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge Street, Portland. The rosaries will be prayed on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel. For those wishing, contributions may be made to St. Patrick School or the Fr.
