Jocelyn Parkhouse is the proud owner of the Honey Hair Company, a full-service salon serving Portland.
Jocelyn opened the salon in May of this year. She utilizes ten beauty professionals. The salon specializes in hair, extensions, eyelash extensions, and medical facials, as well as massage therapy and full-body waxing. There is even a tattoo artist on the premises.
“It was my ten-year dream to open my own salon,” said Jocelyn. “I partnered with my father and we made it happen.”
Jocelyn said that she wanted a nice, new, and beautiful space for her beauty specialists to call home.
“I wanted multiple, different beauty services in one space,” she said. “This is what we have. And my facility in turn allows the other specialists to grow their own businesses.”
Jocelyn studied cosmetology at Protege Academy in East Lansing.
“My family has always been involved in barbering and in the beauty industry, so it was a natural fit for me to enter the field,” she said. “My grandfather Herm Schrauben Jr. was a barber here in Portland as were two of my great uncles. My Aunt Cheryl owns her own salon in Lansing and my mother is a cosmetologist as well.”
Jocelyn said that the varied services that she offers allows her to give Portland many different cosmetology options without the need for people to travel outside of the city to enjoy them. In this way clients are served by local friends and by other familiar people whom they know and respect. It creates a feeling of being with family.
“We are a very friendly and a family-oriented salon,” she said. “We make people feel welcome and warm. We want them to feel like they are at home here, and that they are doing something very special for themselves. Indeed, our goal is to make clients feel like they are with family.”
Jocelyn is very proud of her business.
The Honey Hair Company is more than a salon,” she said. “It’s a legacy to my family’s history and a launching pad for my beauty professionals’ businesses. It’s also very much a love letter to my family and to the community itself. Above all it’s about the feeling of power that we achieve by creating something meaningful and special with our friends and our fellow beauty professionals.”
