The Brook of Portland is a forty-two unit assisted and independent living facility that has been in operation in Portland since 2020. Kim Pappas is the Brook’s vice-president of marketing.

“We specialize in senior living,” said Ms. Pappas. “We have residents who are very independent with regard to daily living as well as residents who need full-time care including help with meal preparation, bathing, and 24 hour support.”

Ms. Pappas also commented on something else that is very important to many seniors.

“People can age in place here at the Brook without changing residences,” she said. “They may spend years here in independent living and then transition into full-time care without going somewhere else. This saves them from the stress of moving and they are able to keep the friendships that they have made here as well as to continue the trust that they have in our staff.”

Ms. Pappas also pointed out that couples with varying needs may stay together in the same multi-room unit.

“This works well for many couples because they may continue to live together even if one member of the couple requires full-time care. The other member may live independently alongside of their partner.”

Ms. Pappas said that the Brook offers many other features that seniors find attractive.

“We have a nurse on staff,” she said. “We also have physician support. We work with home healthcare agencies that provide physical and occupational therapy. We also have hospice services. All this is meant to see to the health and well-being of our residents.”

In addition to the above services, the Brook offers many other programs and activities to keep seniors engaged and content.

“We have fun and stimulating activities available for residents on a daily basis,” said Ms. Pappas. “These activities include Bingo, live music, birthday parties, and church services. We also offer happy hour several times a week with non-alcoholic beverages. Finally, we have exercise classes and gardening, as well as lunch and dinner excursions to local restaurants.”

The Brook offers a 24 hour emergency call system for residents to receive support from staff when they need it. The rooms themselves are quite sizable and everyone has their own bathroom.

“If anyone would like to come here and see the facility for themselves, they may call us and set up an appointment to tour the facility free of charge and to enjoy lunch with us,” said Ms. Pappas. “They need simply call our manager ahead of time to set up the appointment.”

Pricing for residents is based upon the level of care that they need. Pricing rates are available online at www.brookretirement.com or by calling the manager at (517) 647-4790.
