On Sunday, September 28 at 2 pm, the Historical Society of Portland will be in the Portland Cemetery to conduct its annual Cemetery Walk.
Each year we feature four deceased citizens who played a part in Portland’s history.
This year we will be at the back of the cemetery to discuss four remarkably diverse citizens.
Larry Barley was a business owner who was also involved in local politics.
Larry’s sister, Betsy, graduated from the University of Michigan and settled in New York City, where she found work writing for popular magazines of the time.
Clayton Kokx was a local veterinarian and later a meat inspector.
Marie Meitler operated a convalescent/hospice home which sometimes was a maternity home.
We invite the public to come on September 28th at 2 to hear “the rest of their stories,” and perhaps even add to them. For more information, look for us on Facebook. The walk is free, but we gladly accept donations.
