On Tuesday, May 27th, the Shamrocks Softball Team hosted the Laingsburg Wolfpack and split the doubleheader.
Game 1, the Shamrocks lost 0-7. Mattie Honsowitz led the Shamrocks defensively and was backed by some great catches and quick plays. Megan Myers led the team going 1-2 and Gracelyn Rockey went 1-3 with a double.
Game 2 the Shamrocks won 4-3. The game was pitched by Mattie Honsowitz who had grit and mixed well throughout the entire night. Gracelyn Rockey led the team at the plate going 2-3 with a double and 2 RBIs. Lily Sandborn went 1-2 with an RBI, and Aislynn King added a RBI as well.
“Our bats were quiet in game one of tonight’s doubleheader. Despite the 0-7 loss, only two runs were earned by the Wolfpack. With only a pair of hits and some fielding errors, that combination led to the game loss. With that being said, Laingsburg is a top contender in our league and an excellent matchup for us to prepare for Districts on Friday. In game 2, we hit, bunted, and played solid defense. It was a good win for our team! Mattie was excellent tonight and was locked in, Megan worked hard behind the plate and blocked well. We communicated more effectively and it definitely paid off. The timing of the win was special as we honored our three seniors Megan, Bella and Olivia in their last home game of the season.”
The Shamrocks traveled to Potterville on Friday, May 31st, for the District Semi-Final and District Final games.
The district semi-final game was against Climax-Scot and the Shamrocks defeated the Panthers, 12-0. Mattie Honsowitz pitched an efficient shutout with 68 pitches, 7 strikeouts and only allowed 3 hits. Gracelyn Rockey went 2-2 with 1 RBI and 3 runs, Lily Sandborn went 1-2 with 2 runs, Aislynn King contributed 2 RBIs, and Bella Russman and Mattie Honsowitz each added an RBI.
The Shamrocks advanced to the District Final game and defeated the Bellevue Broncos, 17-2. Mattie Honsowitz was locked in and allowed only 1 hit using 76 pitches, and had another 7 strikeouts. At the plate Lily Sandborn led the team going 2-3, had 4 runs, and an RBI. Mattie Honsowitz went 2-3 with a double and 2 RBIs. Gracelyn Rockey went 1-2 with 2 RBIs, Megan Myers went 2-4 and had 3 RBIs, Marian Davlin added 2 RBIs, and Macie Smith and Bella Russman each added an RBI as well.
“The girls came prepared to play, and locked in on both sides of the field. At the plate the girls hit near .400 as a team, executed plays, and took opportunities on the bases. Defensively, we were clean with only 1 error on the day and communicated well. Mattie was locked in and hit the spots we needed, adding her own 14 strikeouts. We scouted our opponents and the team trusted the plan we had. At the end of the day, it’s so wonderful to see the girls rewarded for their hard work this year and sticking with the growth we needed to put us in contention. The deal was only sweetened when we were able to watch the baseball team who is compromised of family members, classmates, and our Shamrock community capture their District Title as well.”
The Regional Semi Final game will be Saturday, June 7th at Maple Valley where they will face Decatur. The Raiders of Decatur defeated Bridgman 7-4 in their district semi-final, and defeated St. Joseph Michigan Lutheran 12-5 in the district finals.
