Portland softball wins District Championship

On Saturday, Portland High School hosted an MHSAA district including Lakewood, Ionia and Hastings

10:00 Game - Portland defeats Lakewood 12-6

The Raiders fell twice to new CAAC White member Lakewood in the regular season.  Saturday’s meeting was the third of the year between the two teams.

After four innings of play, the Vikings had a 6-2 lead over the Raiders, but an explosive fifth inning by Portland put the Raiders in the lead.  Portland would score two more in the top of the seventh to secure a 12-6 win.

Sophomore Bella Spitzley got the win in the circle for Portland holding Lakewood to eight hits while striking out six.

Spitzley also led the Raider offense with three hits.  Junior Bailee Fish (double), junior Autumn Reffitt and sophomore Rylee Miller (double) had two heats each.  Portland hitters had a total of 14 hits in the game.

12:00 Game - Ionia defeats Hastings 9-4

The Bulldogs got the best of the Saxons to advance to the district championship game.

2:00 Game - Portland defeats Ionia 18-3

Portland defeated Ionia twice in regular season play, and on Saturday the Bulldogs were looking for revenge.  But revenge will have to wait until another day as Portland out hit Ionia 20-5 in a four inning 18-3 victory.

Sophomore Claire Lyon finished the game for Portland in dramatic style in the bottom of the fourth with a walk off grand slam to clinch the run rule mercy and secure a district championship for Portland.  Lyon was just short of hitting the cycle in the game.  In addition to her home run she had two triples and one double.

Spitzley (double), Fish (double) and Miller (double) each had three hits.  Senior Jayden Townsend and Reffitt each had two hits including a triple each.  Junior Anastasia Seidelman also had two hits.

Spitzley got the win in the circle holding Ionia to five hits while striking out one.

Look Ahead

Portland improves to 22-8 for the season and advances to regional play at Hudsonville Unity Christian on Saturday June 8th.  The Raiders will face Hamilton at 10:00.  The other side of the regional bracket includes Wayland and host Hudsonville Unity Christian.  The regional championship game is scheduled for 2:00.
