2026 Portland High School graduate Brad Meyers will be wrestling at Grand Valley State University next year.
Meyers finished his senior season undefeated at 54-0, claiming the 190-pound state championship. He was a three-time state qualifier and earned All-State honors in all three appearances. He was named Ionia County wrestler of the year 2026, and Lansing State Journal wrestler of the year 2026.
Meyers was also a standout on the football field for the Raiders, and is the starting right fielder for the baseball team. On the football field, he received all conference 2024, as well as all region and all state honors in 2025.
When asked about his choice to attend GVSU, Meyers said, “I chose to go to GV because I know it’s a competitive school in wrestling and they got a new coach who is really good at what he does. I also chose to go to GV because of how much academic help the athletes are able to get.”
Meyers added, “I would like to thank my wrestling coaches for pushing me through tough practices and hardships during the season to help me get to a state championship, and I would like to thank coach Schrauben our defensive coordinator and position coach for helping me achieve all state in football.”
Portland Wrestling Coach Andy Pulling told the Beacon, “Brad is a rare individual whose success spans the classroom, three sports, and service projects in our community. What makes him exceptional isn’t just this balance, but the elite level at which he performs in each area. There are many high-quality students and college-bound athletes in our community; to stand out is a feat in itself.”
Pulling added, “Brad views challenges as rewards, working tirelessly in the shadows without seeking accolades. He never brags or complains; he simply leads by example. While he doesn't celebrate in the spotlight (though we did catch a quick smile as he received his state championship medal), he understands that having a plan and disciplined work become the collateral for success. I'm excited for him, his wrestling, and his future. Tremendous person!”
