Portland Raider Wrestling Recap

It was another big week for the Portland Raider wrestlers, including Senior Recognition Night, the home double dual with Ionia and St. Johns on Wednesday, 1/8. Seniors recognized at the meet were wrestlers Mason McGregor (150/157), Barrett Spitzley (215/285), Isaac Kramer (132/138), Alexis Pettit (115), Annabelle Brown (120), and statisticians Stasia Seidelman and Jalynn Beckhorn.

Boys Varsity Team won 81-0 over the Ionia Bulldogs with an 11-second pin by Griffin Opperman (150) and a 12-second pin by Barrett Spitzley (285). Portland also won in a competitive dual with the St. Johns Redwings, 51-19, with a 15-second pin by Isaac Kramer (138), bringing the team record to 12-3.

The Girls team faced off with a combined Ionia-St. Johns team and came away with a 30-12 victory. Alexis Pettit (115) had an impressive 33-second pin to cap off her senior recognition night. A. Adler, K. Fuller, J. Miller, and R. Johns also won by fall. The Varsity B team made a strong showing as well in exhibition matches.

The Varsity A team also traveled to the Alma Duals on Saturday, 1/11, and took 2nd out of 10 teams. They competed against Alma, H.H. Dow (Midland), Vassar, Mt. Morris, and Hastings. Hastings is ranked #9 in Division 1, and Portland is ranked #4 in Division 3. Portland emerged victorious over Alma (71-6), H.H. Dow (62-18), Vassar (71-9), and Mt. Morris (52-15) and fell in a close contest to Hastings (27-35). Undefeated wrestlers were Branlun Simon (113), Landon Lanz (120), Landon Guilford (165), Brad Meyers (175), and Barrett Spitzley (215). Also scoring for the Raiders were I. Kramer, Z. Stanton, G. Opperman, M. McGregor, G. Williams, S. Dakin, and A. Feldpausch.

On Friday, 1/10, the Girls team traveled to Fowlerville, and performed exceptionally well, placing third out of 39 teams. Rylan Johns won the 235 lb. bracket, ending one exciting match with a 21-second pin. Jonnie Miller (140) and Georgia Stahl (105) each took 3rd in their brackets. In addition to tournament placers, scoring wrestlers included A. Adler, A. Brown, K. Fuller, and W. Pohl.

On Monday, 1/6, the Varsity B team traveled to the Lowell Jamboree. Undefeated wrestlers were Chase Fullet (157), George Burgoyne (157), Garrett Ingraham (190), Evan Keilen (126), Brayden Hinds (132), Wyatt Ingraham (157), and Michael DiOrio (190). Also scoring for the Raiders was L. Valles.
