The Portland girls wrestling team will once again be represented at the MHSAA Individual State Finals, as senior Lilli Teachworth and sophomore Georgia Stahl earned qualifying spots at Sunday’s regional tournament held at Warren Mott High School. The state finals take place March 6–7 at Ford Field.
Six Portland wrestlers competed in the regional tournament, as one of the top 32 wrestlers in Michigan in their weight classes. Each tournament hosted at one of four statewide sites where only the top four finishers in each bracket advanced to the state individual finals.
Teachworth Returns to Ford Field
Senior Lilli Teachworth (105 lbs) secured her second consecutive trip to the state finals after finishing fourth in her bracket. Teachworth opened the day with a dramatic first‑round pin, securing the fall with just seven seconds remaining. After dropping her second match by decision, she rebounded in the blood round with a pin over her opponent from Romeo in 3:45. Teachworth, a second‑year wrestler with a 32–17 season record, previously qualified for the 2025 state tournament while competing for Lakewood High School.
Stahl Becomes Portland’s Second Two‑Time Qualifier
Sophomore Georgia Stahl (115 lbs) continued her strong postseason tradition, becoming Portland’s second-ever two‑time state qualifier. Stahl dominated her opening match with a 17–1 technical fall and, after a loss in the second round, responded with another commanding tech fall—18–1—against her opponent from Bay City John Glenn. She closed the day with a hard‑fought 7–4 overtime victory to take third place.
Strong Team Showing
Four additional Portland wrestlers competed at regionals, giving their all in an effort to take the podium and keep their season alive.
Alli Teachworth (So., 130 lbs) — 0–2 at regionals, 24-16 season record
Jonnie Miller (Jr., 155 lbs) — 1–2 at regionals, 33-20 season record
Maddison Pohl (Jr., 170 lbs) — 0–2 at regionals, 27-18 season record
Rylan Johns (Sr., 235 lbs) — 1–2 at regionals, 34-9 season record
Senior Rylan Johns made program history last season as Portland’s first all‑state finisher, placing eighth at the 2025 finals. She’s finishing her career with Portland wrestling with an impressive 74 career victories and plans to continue wrestling in college next year.
A Growing Program With Consistent Success
Since its establishment in 2023, the Portland girls wrestling team has qualified two athletes for the state finals every season. Coaches and athletes alike hope to build on last year’s milestone and bring home additional all‑state honors in 2026.
