Portland Bowlers find success at “Battle of the Baker”
On Sunday, the Portland High School Bowling team traveled to Battle Creek for the annual “Battle of the Baker” tournament which was held at M-66 Lanes.
The girls started out shaky in the qualifying round but managed to qualify in 5th place out of 10 teams (Grass Lake, Coloma, Napoleon, Jonesville, Olivet, South Haven, Otsego, Handover-Horton, Marshall).
Once in match play (best 2 out of 3 games), the girls lost the 1st game, but then rebounded and won the next two games that moved them into the next round against the number 1 seed team Grass Lake.
Girls coach Joe Whitford said, “The excitement & Keeping the team positive was the key today to beat them and move into the championship game against Jonesville”. With some solid hit and some lucky hits the Portland Girls team came home with the Win!”
Boys coach Dan Graef was very proud on how well his team played. He said, “They had a solid day today as they also kept a positive attitude to move though the field to finish in 3rd place.”
