PHS Digital Journalism Project: The Benefits of Exploring Your Creativity
By Raina Krausz
When I was younger I remember the only time of day at school that I would look forward to was art class. Finger paintings, clay sculptures, and drawing with chalk were what brought me happiness. I’ve noticed that adults and others lack a creative outlet. When people get older and they have a job and kids, it can be hard for them to find an emotional yet creative outlet.
The problem is that everyday kids go to school all across America, anxious and stressed and drained of schoolwork. This stress over school can make educational development unenjoyable for many students all over the country. Over 31% of current high school students are stressed and 29% are bored of school.
So many students are tired of going to school when really, school should be enjoyable. The school system is what is guiding these kids for the set up of the rest of their lives. So why should they feel miserable throughout it?
Mary Alvord, a clinical psychologist in Maryland and public education coordinator for the American Psychological Association, says "A little stress is a good thing," Alvord says. "It can motivate students to be organized. But too much stress can backfire." In a study done by Girija Kaimal held at Drexel University, it says, “The researchers found that 75 percent of the participants’ cortisol levels lowered during their 45 minutes of making art.” This shows how much of a positive impact an art class can have. Everyone needs a break in their day to day lives, and being creative with art can be beneficial to the brain and to personal mental health. People can develop creative problem solving skills and it's a great way to relax yet express yourself. Art class can feel like a fresh breath of air and can relieve the tension and stress from other classes. I am a student in a painting class currently and I have noticed how much better I feel about the rest of my day after that class. The Art teacher here at Portland High school, Mrs Gorzen, says “During these classes you play with designs, you play with elements, and you play with patience.” This shows how easily pieces of art can be expressed in their own ways, especially one someone has taken time on. There are varieties of art classes that can be participated in, however, I would suggest drawing. Drawing art teaches depth and perspective and can open up many techniques for other art subjects such as painting and sculpting. For those who are looking for something exciting, a new project or a creative outlet in general, maybe art can be an exciting new adventure.
