Mary Ellen McCormack, Sunfield, MI, age 79 passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026 in Charlotte, MI.
Mary Ellen was born on October 25, 1946 in Charlotte, MI to Duncan and Ellen McCormack. Never a stranger to farm work and farm life, Mary Ellen grew up on the family farm, helping where she could from milking cows to feeding calves and making meals for workers.
Though she rarely watched TV in her later years, she spent countless hours listening to games and sports talk radio on her transistor radio to stay current on her favorite sports, especially Tigers baseball, and MSU basketball and football. When she wasn’t reading or listening to sports, she enjoyed spending her time in the kitchen baking bread and rolls or making meals.
Over the years, Mary Ellen also enjoyed taking several organized bus trips with family or friends to see different parts of the state and US, including fall color tours in Michigan and the East Coast, and a trip to Pennsylvania’s Dutch Country. Locally, she also enjoyed her shopping trips and outings with her best friend, Gloria, and the time they spent with their friends and the Red Hatters.
Always greeting with a smile and a wave, Mary Ellen’s gift was reaching out to others. Her generous and compassionate heart touched the lives of many people with an abundance of cards, letters, and gifts over the years, often to people she barely knew. She was relentless about remembering birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions for others and everyone she knew was on the receiving end of her mail-order, catalog shopping habits.
Mary Ellen is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Patrick. She is survived by her siblings, John (Kathy) McCormack, Jean (Dennis) Goodman, Mike (Pam) McCormack; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Gloria Hiar.
The Funeral Service honoring Mary Ellen will be officiated by Pastor Robert Beckett at 1:00 p.m., April 20, 2026 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge Street, Portland with a private interment. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ECHRS Foundation.
