The St. Patrick's Varsity Girls basketball team was Breslin Bound on Thursday night with a matchup against Onekama. The Shamrocks took a lead in the first quarter and Macie Leonard knocked down some key shots and put backs that gave her 10 points in the first half. The Portagers made a slight run in the second quarter but were met by the Shamrocks with a reset and energetic second half team. The Lady Rocks attacked the boards and used poise to break the full court press. Down the stretch the team stayed strong against the trapping pressure and knocked down free throws to solidify the win. When time ran out, the Shamrocks had a 49-26 win.
Macie Leonard led the team in scoring, with 18 points, Gracelyn Rockey followed with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds, Macie Smith had 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. Lily Sandborn was lockdown on defense at the top of the key and had steals and defensive tie ups for the Shamrocks. Marian Davlin brought in 3 rebounds, 5 points, and got every loose ball near her with great effort and energy.
The Lady Shamrocks move on to the State Finals Saturday, March 21st vs. Ishpeming at 10:00 am at the Breslin Center.
The Hematites of Ishpeming have a 24-3 overall record this season, with their only losses coming to Negaunee, Gladstone and Houghton. Ishpeming defeated Morenci 37-34 in their semi-finals match-up on Thursday.
