Portland High School recently announced the hiring of Allison DeGroot as the new Varsity Volleyball Head Coach.

PHS Athletic Director Jason Haid said, “Coach DeGroot is no stranger to Portland Volleyball. She served as a coach within our program from 2012-2013 before taking a two-year hiatus to focus on completing her master’s degree. She returned this past season as a varsity assistant coach. Her familiarity with our athletes, families, and community, combined with her passion for the sport, made her a strong candidate for this role.” Haid also added, "It is clear that Coach DeGroot has a genuine commitment to helping Student-Athletes grow on and off the court.”

DeGroot has a very detailed resume. She attended Fowlerville High School where she developed her love for the game. DeGroot said Fowlerville is where she learned the value of teamwork, discipline, and competing with integrity.  After High school DeGroot attended Central Michigan University where she was recruited to play volleyball, ultimately DeGroot decided not to continue her playing career and focus on getting her degree in secondary education, during this time she stayed connected to athletics. DeGroot also added, “Over the years, coaching has become one of my greatest passions. I've coached athletes at multiple levels and have had the opportunity to help players develop not only their volleyball skills but also their confidence, leadership, and character. Those experiences have prepared me for the opportunity to lead the Portland volleyball program.” When asked how she felt the moment she realized she would now be leading the Volleyball program DeGroot responded with, “I was incredibly honored and excited. Portland has a strong tradition of excellence in athletics, and I understand the responsibility that comes with leading a volleyball program. At the same time, I felt grateful for the trust that the administration had placed in me.”

“As a school counselor, I already have the privilege of working with many of these students every day.  Being able to support them both in school, on the court, and in their future is something that means a great deal to me. I'm excited to build meaningful relationships with our athletes and help them grow into confident young women who are prepared for success long after volleyball.” Coach DeGroot also had a message for the Portland Community, “First, I want to thank everyone for the warm welcome as I return to this role and the excitement surrounding the program. The support from our students, parents, alumni, and fans is one of the things that makes Portland such a special place.”

“I want our community to know that our athletes will work hard, compete with heart, and represent Portland with pride. We will strive to create a program built on respect, accountability, and a team-first mentality.”

“I also hope our community feels like they are part of this journey. Whether you're cheering in the stands, volunteering your time, or supporting our athletes behind the scenes, your encouragement makes a difference. Together, I believe we can build something special that the entire Portland community will be proud of for years to come.”
