Lady Shamrocks split with Laingsburg

The St. Patrick's softball team traveled to Laingsburg for a matchup with the Wolfpack on Wednesday, April 24th. The Shamrocks played well overall, and were able to split the doubleheader, losing the first game 4-10, and winning the second game 10-9.

In the first game, Carly Scheurer picked up the loss, pitching 5 1/3 innings, giving up 7 hits and 8 earned runs. Offensive leaders were Lydia Meredith who went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, and Irene Mackowiak who went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI.

In the second game, Carly Scheurer was the winning pitcher, throwing for 5 innings, giving up 4 earned runs and striking out 4. Offensive leaders were Lydia Meredith who went 3 for 4 with a triple, Samee Teachworth who went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, and Aurora Beckhold who went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.

The Lady Shamrocks were scheduled to play versus PW on Monday, April 29th, but that game was cancelled and will be rescheduled. Tentative dates are Wednesday or Friday of this week. The Shamrocks are currently scheduled to host Saranac on Thursday, May 2nd.

Coach Jocelyn Rockey had mixed feelings about the night. “Game one was a tough loss for our team. We started off with a 2-0 lead in the second inning and fell behind in the third. We added another run in the fourth but in the bottom of the sixth we had a tough inning and Laingsburg hit the ball extremely well. That combination led to a loss and one that had several “learning scenarios” to take and internalize as we move forward in the league. We rallied together and game two became an offensive battle. Our girls defended well, communicated well, and were aggressive at the plate. We took that game by one run and we attribute that from the girls’ grit and pure determination to hold that lead. Taking game two was good for our girls and building their confidence as we face some tough teams next week. Being extremely young has some amazing advantages and also a few plays each game that make you go back to practice with a purpose in educating our team. Overall, we are pleased with their progress and hope to see the consistent growth.”
