St. Patrick's boys outlast the Fowler Eagles
On Wednesday, December 19th, the Fowler Eagles visited Portland for a match with the St. Patrick's Shamrocks. The Eagles came to play, and made the Shamrocks work hard to eventually defeat them 52-42 after being closer for much of the game.
In the 1st quarter, led by exceptional scrappiness from Nate Leahy and his 7 points, the Shamrocks jumped out ahead 11-8 winning a hard-fought quarter.
Fowler fought back to take the lead in the 2nd quarter, winning the period 14-9 to take a 22-20 halftime lead.
The 3rd quarter was another defensive struggle, with Brandon Scheurer hustling and putting in 8 to keep the Shamrocks in the game and win the quarter 10-8 to tie up the game at 30-30 going into the 4th quarter.
The Eagles jumped out on top of the Shamrocks early in the 4th quarter, but the Shamrocks were just too strong for them this night. Great free throw shooting from Brandon Scheurer and Connor Cross, 2 three pointers from Nate Leahy, and a scrappy 4 points from Sam Mauren gave the Shamrocks a 10 point victory.
Coach Mark Scheurer was happy to beat a quality opponent. "Anytime you beat an opponent like Fowler it's a good night. They are well coached and always play their opponents tough. I was pleased with our defensive effort and ability to keep Fowler to 42 points and not one of their players scoring in double figures. I was also pleased with our ball movement and spacing on offense. We are getting better with both."
Offensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Brandon Scheurer with 21 points 5 rebounds 1 assist 3 steals and 1 block, Nate Leahy with 17 points 7 rebounds 1 assist and 2 steals, Connor Cross with 7 points 3 rebounds 1 assist and 1 steal and Sam Mauren with 5 points 3 rebounds 5 assists and 5 steals.
The Shamrocks go to Dansville on Friday, December 21st, at 7pm.
