Both Raider Basketball Teams Defeat Laingsburg

On Monday night, both Raiders varsity basketball squads faced the Wolfpack of Laingsburg, and both Raider teams picked up wins.

For the girls, the Raiders trailed most of the game, but thanks to some stingy defense and holding Laingsburg to only one point in the fourth quarter, Portland came away with a 32-31 victory.

Leading scorers for the Raiders were both freshmen. Ashley Bower had 16 points and Breckyn Werner had seven. Kara Mahoney led the Wolfpack with nine points.

Girls score by quarter:

1 2 3 4 Final

Portland 6 10 8 8 32

Laingsburg 10 9 11 1 31

For the boys, strong defense late in the game was also key. They held the Wolfpack to just two points in the fourth quarter. Owen Russell led the Raiders with 14 points, followed by David Svada with 10 points.

Boys score by Quarter:

1 2 3 4 Final

Portland 15 9 14 13 51

Laingsburg 10 13 16 2 41

The Raider boys move to 1-1 on the season after falling to Mason in their opener last week. The boys next action is Friday night at 6:00 when they host Ionia. The girls are now 1-0 on the season and will host Ionia Friday after the conclusion of the boys game.
