Obituary of Alice Dawn Sonday
Alice Dawn Sonday, age 82, of Portland, passed away Friday, November 16, 2018. She was born August 9, 1936, the daughter of Leo M. and Marie P. (Fischer) Selden. Alice served in the lunchroom at Oakwood for nearly 20 years and was a wonderful cook and enjoyed canning. She was an avid bingo player, she also appreciated spending time outdoors and camping at Gun Lake, Davenport, FL, and in Portland. Alice truly treasured spending time with her family and loved ones.
Preceding Alice in death are her parents; brother, Howard Selden; brothers-in-law, Robert Sonday and Robert Hollabaugh; and sister-in-law, Rita Mason. Alice is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, Leon Sonday; children, Dolores Sonday, Joyce (Jon) Bower, Connie Rosas, Steve (Kendra) Sonday; 7 grandchildren, Brad (Rachel) Bower, Sara Bower, Celestina Rosas, Alicia (Hector) Contreras, Marianna (Cody) Kalis, and Jorgen and Gina Sonday; 5 great-grandchildren, Elise and Lily Bower, Joshua and Hailee Morales, and Olivia Contreras; siblings, Ernie (Marian) Selden, Joann Hollabaugh, and Mary Lou Lash; brothers-in-law, Jerry (Gertie) Sonday and Jim (Marsha) Sonday; sister-in-law, Marilyn Selden; and many special nieces and nephews.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Darrel Kempf at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Portland V.F.W. #4090. The family will receive friends on Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge Street, Portland. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia Commission on Aging Meals on Wheels or the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of Alice. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes.
