Jacob Veale Named October Student Athlete of the Month

Jacob Veale, a senior slotback on the Portland High School Raider football team, has been chosen by the readers of The Portland Beacon to be the winner of the monthly J-Dubbs Signature Subs Student Athlete of the Month award.

Jacob received 89.6% of the votes in this month's poll. The Portland Beacon’s Student Athlete of the Month contest is sponsored by J-Dubbs Signature Subs of Portland. The monthly winner receives a free sub of his/her choice from J-Dubbs Signature Subs. Monthly winners will also be entered for a chance at the Student Athlete of the Year award, and a free party platter from J-Dubbs Signature Subs.

When asked about playing for the Raiders, Jacob said, "This team, town and atmosphere are incredible and I couldn't have any success without all of my teammates."

So far this season, Jacob has rushed for 1,062 yards and 18 touchdowns on 166 carries. He also has five receptions for 165 yards and two touchdowns, and a 90-yard kick return for a touchdown.

Coach John Novara said, "Jacob has had an outstanding year for us so far. He did a great job learning a new system and making the transition from a wide receiver to a running back. We always knew that he had speed, quickness, and agility, but what has impressed us most, is the power that he possesses when he carries the football. Jake continues to be a great teammate and continues to improve each week."

Jacob’s father and PHS Athletic Director Kevin Veale said, “For me, this has been one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life. As Athletic Director here for 19 years, I am already very proud of our outstanding football program but to have Jacob now be a part of it with me and having the success he has has been awesome. A life experience I will always cherish and never forget.”

Jacob came to PHS in January of last year. He had been in the Portland district until third grade, before moving to the Ionia Public Schools, and finally came back home to Portland last year.

Jacob ran track for the Raiders in the spring and was a league and regional champion, and advanced to the state finals.

The Raiders will host the Lansing Catholic Cougars on Friday, November 2nd at 7:00 PM.
