Obituary for Richard Newell Howell


Richard Newell Howell, of Portland, age 82, passed away on July 29, 2018 from injuries suffered in a fall. He was born on October 4, 1935 in Wabash, IN, the son of Vear and Hazel Howell. Richard is a charter member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church. Richard is a retired professor from Lansing Community College, was a member of the Michigan Naval Commanders (former Commander in Chief), and the American Legion. He served in the U.S. Army (1958) and the Army Reserve until 1964. He loved his family, the cottage at Canadian Lakes, golfing, fishing, watching Michigan and Detroit Lions football. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Lester, Harold, and Warren Howell. On July 20, 1963 he married Marie (Schluckebier) Howell and she survives him; son, Gary Howell; daughter, Theresa Howell (Mike) Durfee; grandsons, Matthew and Brian Durfee; sister-in-law, Virginia Howell; many nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service will be conducted by Pastor Ed Filter at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 17, 2018 at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 8867 Kent St., Portland. Interment will follow at Danby Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the V.F.W. Post #4090. The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m., Thursday, August 16, 2018 at the Lehman Funeral Homes, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Ogemaw Hills Free Methodist Church Bible Quizzers, 3480 W. M76., P.O.
