Week Three High School Football Preview

The St. Patrick Shamrocks look to remain unbeaten as they travel to Webberville this Friday for a 7:00 PM kick off.

The Spartans of Webberville are one and one on the season. They lost 40 to six at Bellevue in week one, and beat Mesick 34-20 in week two.

Sophomore Ned Smith will likely play a key role in the offense as he leads the Shamrocks in rushing for the year, with 305 yards on 22 carries.

After two games, the Shamrocks offense has put up 106 points, while their stingy defense has only given up 20 points.

When asked about the game with Webberville, St. Patrick’s Head Coach Patrick Russman said, “We are looking forward to playing the game. Webberville is a solid, well coached team. We look forward to the challenge and getting better as a team.”

The Portland High School Raiders look to get back into the “W” column this week as they host Williamston at 7:00 PM.

The Raiders fell to Lansing Sexton in a thriller last week, 20-14. The battle with the much bigger and faster Sexton squad should have shown the young Raiders that they can hang with anyone on their schedule.

The Hornets of Williamston are coming in with a two win and zero loss record. They beat Pennfield 34-13 in week one, and Huron 34-seven in week two.

The Raider offense has been led by senior speedster Brock Gross, who leads the team with 102 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Senior Quarterback Austin Allison has thrown for 130 yards in the first two games, with senior receiver Gavin Dennany hauling in 59 of those yards.

The Raider’s formidable defense has been led by senior linebackers Dean Battley and Devin Miller, who are the top two tacklers for the season so far.

When asked about this week’s match-up, Raider Head Coach John Novara said, “Williamston is a tough opponent and they have many athletes. Their QB throws the ball well and is a very good runner. They have speed at the receiver position and are very well coached. We are going to need to get our offense on track to be successful on Friday night.”

Friday will also be Jr. Raider Night at PHS, where the 4th-8th grade cheerleaders and football players will be recognized before the varsity game. Head Coach John Novara also lets the 8th grade Jr. Raider football players sit in on his high energy pre-game speech.
