Thrift Shack Celebrates One Year in Business

Kim Glick and her daughter Autumn have always loved shopping at thrift stores.  The thrill of finding that bargain or the treasure you didn’t even know you needed is a familiar feeling to Glick.  As the old saying goes, if you do what you do love, you will never work a day in your life and so it was that the Glick and her daughter opened The Thrift Shack.  “One day we were joking around about opening up our own store,” says Glick, “we had an opportunity to do so and we ran with it,”

That was more than a year ago, recently, the second hand store at the corner of Grand River Ave. and Bridge Street on Portland’s east side celebrated one year of business.  In the past year Glick says that the business has seen ups and downs, but the people they have connected with make it worth it.  “It makes my heart happy to see people in other stores and they'll come up and say, hi or they'll bring in art work they've done with items they've picked up at the store or show me pictures of the dance they went to all dressed up,” Glick says, “I even had one gentlemen make me something which meant a lot to me.”

The thrift store aims to help families and organizations like local schools in need as well as be a profitable business.  Glick looks forward to the business continuing to grow and evolve in the future.  “I want to thank Portland for the warm welcoming, and the good vibes,” she says, “It's nice to know I have several people rooting for us to make it and a big thank you to all that support us by dropping donations off and shopping.”

The store at 1328 E. Grand River Ave in Portland carries a wide assortment of secondhand items from clothing and household goods to books and toys They are open for business Tuesdays through Saturdays.  Hours of operation vary but are generally in the afternoon.  For more information and up to date hours of operation, offers and deals, you can check out the Thrift Shack on Facebook.
