Longtime community leader, small-business owner, and current Ionia County Commissioner Terry Frewen has officially announced his candidacy for State Representative for Michigan’s 78th House District.
Frewen, a graduate of Portland High School, holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Ferris State University in Construction Management, with a specialized emphasis in Road Construction. His professional career spans more than 30 years as the owner of a successful real estate business, serving Mid-Michigan families, homeowners, and small businesses.
“As a father, business owner, and public servant, I’ve seen firsthand both the challenges and opportunities facing our region,” Frewen said. “Now more than ever, Michigan needs leaders with common-sense solutions — not the arguing and gridlock that hold us back.”
Extensive Public and Community Service
Frewen is currently serving his community as an Ionia County Commissioner and Chair of the County Finance Committee, working to ensure fiscal transparency and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.
His broad leadership background includes:
· Past President – Greater Lansing Association of REALTORS®
· Chair – GLAR Multiple Listing Service (MLS) Committee
· Chair – GLAR Finance Committee
· Chair – Michigan REALTORS® Scholarship Trust Committee
· Graduate – Michigan REALTORS® Leadership Academy
· REALTOR® of the Year (2015) and REALTOR® Active in Politics Award (2022)
· Past Chair – Ionia County Economic Alliance
· Board Member – Ionia County Brownfield Redevelopment Board
· Board Member – Ionia/Montcalm DHHS Board
· Board Member – Ducks Unlimited, Portland Chapter
· Past President – Portland Area Chamber of Commerce
· Cub Scout den leader and Little League coach
“My entire life has been rooted in service — to my county, my industry, my community, and my family,” Frewen said. “I’m running because our district deserves a representative who listens, works hard, and solves problems.”
Key Priorities for the 78th District
Frewen’s campaign will focus on delivering practical, results-driven solutions grounded in the values of the people he hopes to represent. As a Republican candidate, his top priorities include:
· Fiscal Responsibility
Ensuring Lansing lives within its means — just like Michigan families and small businesses do.
· Strong Local Control
Supporting local government decision-making rather than top-down mandates from the Capitol.
· Support for Small Businesses & Property Owners
Cutting unnecessary regulations and empowering Main Street economies.
· Lowering the Cost of Living & Energy
Addressing rising prices that impact families, seniors, farmers, and working residents.
· Roads, Bridges & Infrastructure
Leveraging his background in road construction to push for long-term, cost-effective infrastructure improvements.
· Safe, High-Quality K–12 Education
Promoting strong schools, parental involvement, and educational excellence.
· Mental Health Access & Care
Expanding mental-health resources, especially in rural and underserved communities.
A Commitment Rooted in Conservative Values
Frewen describes himself as a Constitutional, Christian, Conservative, and a Conservationist committed to protecting Michigan’s natural resources and outdoor heritage.
“Our district and our state need leaders with real-world experience, grounded values, and the ability to work with people — not leaders who complain about problems but can’t solve them,” Frewen said.
The Committee to Elect Terence Frewen will be releasing additional campaign announcements, public events, and policy positions in the coming weeks.
