Sophie Schrauben Named June Student-Athlete of the Month


Sophie Schrauben, a sophomore on the St. Patrick School track and field team, has been selected as the Portland Beacon and J-Dubb’s Signature Subs Student-Athlete of the month for June 2022.


In her nomination, coach Dawn Fedewa said, “Throughout the season, Sophie improved week after week while balancing the tough task of competing as part of the St. Patrick Varsity Track & Field team, as well as the St. Patrick JV Softball team. Her hard work and dedication showed as she qualified for the Track & Field State Finals in the 4x200 relay, 300 hurdles & 4x400 relay. As the perfect ending to an incredible season, Sophie was named All-State and Academic All-State in all three events, finishing in 4th place in the 4x400 relay, 6th place in the 300 hurdles and 8th place in the 4x200 relay.”


Fedewa added, “Sophie is a rising star who will continue to find success because of her determination and willingness to push herself in every practice and race. She makes those around her better because of her work ethic and love of the sport!”


To be nominated for this award, a student-athlete must attend either Portland High School or St. Patrick School, and be a member of a varsity sports program or school-sponsored athletic club at his/her school. Nominations may be made by a member of their high school coaching staff, athletic director, principal, or a school recognized student government organization at his/her school. Nominations are also accepted from The Portland Beacon contributing writers.


The monthly winner is selected by a panel of Beacon contributors. The winner receives a free sub thanks to our sponsor, J-Dubb’s Signature Subs.


Monthly winners are entered into the student-athlete of the year contest. The winner for the year receives a party platter from J-Dubb’s Signature Subs.

April – Kenzie Fedewa SPS Track and Field

May – Noah Simposn PHS Track and Field

Marc Nobis – PHS Baseball

PHS Baseball coach Chris Trierweiler said, “Marc has been a key contributor to the success of our 2022 Baseball season. He has been a solid Outfielder & Pitcher for us with the lowest ERA on the team with a 1.6 and a 7-2 overall pitching record. He contributes with a strong bat, finishing the season batting .348. Marc was awarded All- Conference CAAC, All-District (Pitcher), All-Academic Conference, All- Academic District. He was given the “Character Award” from his coaches. This award reveals the positive impact of Marc’s values and beliefs. He displays Integrity, Kindness, Loyalty and Hard Work to his teammates, opposing teams, officials and coaches at all times. We look forward to Marc’s leadership next year as a Senior!” Nobis was a two time varsity player.


Rylee Scheurer – SPS Softball

Scheurer was a sophomore pitcher and centerfielder for the Shamrocks and was named first team all-league, all-district, all-region, all-state. Shamrock coach Jocelyn Rockey said, “Rylee is our team catalyst and works to exude the player that everyone can rely on. She works hard, speaks with determination, and shows her teammates grace. Rylee worked hard in the off season and now is already starting to work for her junior season. She has a tremendous bunt, slap, power slap combo that makes it almost impossible to put her out. She pitches well and keeps our team in contention for each big game, and plays incredible defense in the outfield. Her recognition is far and wide because of the type of player and teammate that she is.”
