Shamrocks beat back the Spartans
On Saturday, November 7th, the Waldron Spartans visited Portland for a playoff game against the St. Patrick Shamrocks. The Shamrocks were just too fast for the Spartans, and handily defeated them 53-26.
In the quarter, it was the Derec Fedewa show, with him scoring three touchdowns of 1, 74, and 15 yards respectively. This left the score 18-0 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Derec Fedewa struck again with a 6 yard pass from Connor Cross. Brian Kwiecinski followed that up with a successful kick. The Spartans struck with a 24 yard pass on 4th and long, before Connor Cross broke through on a 19 yard scramble. This left the score 31-6 at halftime.
After the half, Shane Cook caught a 45 yard touchdown pass from Connor Cross, and Brian Kwiecinski followed up with a good kick. The Spartans marched down the field and scored. The Shamrocks then capped off a long drive with a one yard Payton Russman rushing td, followed by a successful kick from Kwiecinski. This left the game firmly in hand after three quarters, with the Shamrocks leading 45-14.
Derec Fedewa struck one more time, bursting free for a 78 yard touchdown, and a good two point conversion pass from Cross to freshmen Tyler Groothuis. The Spartans added two late scores to make the final 53-26.
Offensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Derec Fedewa who had 10 carries for 252 yards and 4 touchdowns and two receptions for 24 yards and a touchdown. Connor Cross went 6 for 7 for 138 yards and two touchdowns, and he had 5 carries for 76 yards and a touchdown. Payton Russman had 3 receptions for 69 yards as well.
Defensively, Braxton Teachworth had 13 tackles, Brian Kwiecinski had 13 tackles, Brice Cook had 11 tackles, and Jacobe Hayes-Dunning had 9 tackles.
The Shamrocks will host the Colon Magi next Saturday at 2:00 pm at Portland High School. Colon is the defending Division I state champion.
