After a disappointing finish to last season, losing to eventual State Runner Up Morrice in the playoffs, the Shamrocks return a bevy of starters and really have a great season on the horizon.
Returning 8 senior players, Brady Leonard (QB/RB/LB), Charlie Thelen (TE/DE), Gavin Groothuis (TE/DB), Hudson King (RB/DB), Augustus Teachworth (OL/LB), Aiden Mosser (OL/LB), Logan Kreiger (OL/DL), Brody Beckhold (OL/DL) and Nick Pung (OL/DL) the Shamrocks have excellent leadership and experience coming back.
Juniors Aiden Fandel (RB/DB), Jerryd Scheurer (RB/DB), Kaeden Brown (RB/DL), Chase Bengel (TE/DE), James Miller (TE/LB), Tyler Thelen (TE/DE), Mason Simon (RB/DB), Caleb Pline (RB/DL), Ben White (RB/DE) and Isaiah Rockey (TE/LB) provide incredible depth and experience as well.
The Shamrock varsity will be manned completely by upperclassmen for the first time in many years, and have the size, speed and depth to compete with any team in the state. The Freshmen and Sophomores will also be moved up as need and opportunity dictate. Their schedule is very strong, starting out with Merrill, followed by the grudge match with Morrice, then travelling to Byron. Perennial rival Fulton comes to Portland next, and consistent competitor Coleman also visits the Shamrocks at home. The Shamrocks have a road game against Bellaire in the north country, followed by Webberville. New comer to 8-man football, Potterville is next, and they finish off the season home against Montabella.
Hopes are very high, as the Shamrocks return the vast majority of their starters and contributors from a very successful season last year. Brady Leonard returns as starting QB, but Junior Jerryd Scheurer is also looking for snaps behind the center. Both of these players have multiple years of varsity experience and have proven their competence both as runners and as passers. This year, Jerryd and Brady are also being looked at as defensive players, and are showing that they are ready to play both sides of the ball. Hudson King returns from a very successful junior year as a strong and fast running back, and he is also pushing to play high level as a defensive back this year. Charlie Thelen returns one of the best receivers in the state, and he also is an exceptional defensive end. Linebackers Augustus Teachworth, Aiden Mosser and Ben White all return, and will be one of the best linebacking groups that St. Patrick has ever fielded. Logan Kreiger also returns after starting at Guard last year, and he is also pushing to play a ton of defense as a nose guard or defensive end. Brody Beckhold returns as the starting center, and his consistency and strength will anchor a stout and athletic offensive line. Gavin Groothuis worked hard in the off season, and will contribute to a strong defensive secondary and receiving corps. Nick Pung is playing his first year of football, as a senior, but off season work has built him into a strong offensive and defensive lineman that will be pushing for a starting spot. Junior Mason Simon returns, after playing high level varsity ball as a sophomore, to earn a starting role in the secondary. Junior starter Caleb Pline also returns, as a strong and agile nose guard, after having a fantastic sophomore year. Junior Tyler Thelen is a tall, and fast (long legs eat up the yardage...) receiver and defensive end, Isaiah Rockey is fighting for a starting spot at linebacker and receiver, Aiden Fandel, Kaeden Brown, Chase Bengel, and James Miller are all excellent football players, and will fight for meaningful contributions- all of these players would start on most teams in the state.
