Shamrock Softball takes 2nd in Buche Tournament, Sweep Ionia

Saturday, May 28th – Buche Tournament

St. Patrick Varsity softball participated in their second Buche Tournament hosted by Portland Public Schools and partnered with the Buche family and the American Cancer Association.

Last year, Portland’s head softball coach, Brandee Novara reached out with the opportunity to participate in their already established fundraising tournament and we couldn’t have been more honored to participate and help raise money for this cause. Suzanne Buche was a passionate, kind hearted, and tremendously generous woman. We were honored to help raise money in her name. This year Brandee again offered and we were thrilled to join the community together again for such a great cause. Both the Portland Raider and Portland St. Patrick Shamrock Varsity teams walked through town raising money for the American Cancer Society. With their efforts alone the teams brought back over $1,000 from local families and businesses (special shout out to Mike Mauren’s Dental by Design and Chopper and Jonda Schruaben at the Wagon Wheel). It was a great bonding experience and standing by a local family is what we call a lifelong lesson and memory.

In the tournament the Shamrocks fell to Owosso 0-8; and then won 12-0 against Reed City and 11-0 against Portland. Offensively, Owosso’s pitcher, Ireland, was an excellent challenge for us and defensively we left the game with only one error. In the Portland game Carly Scheurer pitched and completed 11 strikeouts. Bella Meyers went 2/3 with a triple and 2 RBIs, Lydia Meredith went 2/3 with 3 RBIs, Rylee Scheurer went 2/4 with a Homerun and 2 RBIs. In the Reed City game, Rylee Scheurer had 5 strikeouts in 6 innings. Emma Honsowitz went 4/4 with 4 RBIs. Addie Scheurer went 3/3, Bella Meyers went 2/4 with 2 RBIs, and Carly Scheurer went 1/2. As a team we hit .517 for a great finale game in this tournament.

Coaches Comments:

As we entered into our most critical week of the season our focus has been bringing the correct starting energy, staying aggressive at the plate, and playing through tough situations. The girls took those three mental focuses and transferred them over against a very good Ionia team. Tomorrow we move on to the Greater Lansing Softball Classic against Holt at Ranney Park, and Saturday is our District games in Carson City. We look forward to bringing our best team out this week and proving how big we can play.
