Shamrock Softball opens season splitting with Carson City

The St. Patrick’s varsity softball traveled to Carson City on Tuesday for the opening day kick off double header. The Shamrocks split with the Eagles and took their victory with a walk off hit by Lily Sandborn.

Game One: 6-9 Loss

Tori Sandborn took her first 3 strikeouts of the season and lead the team from the mound. At the plate Tori also went 2/3 and had 4 RBIs and 1 run. Rylee Scheurer went 3/4 with a run, a double and 2 SB’s. Gracelyn Rockey went 2/4 with 2 runs, and a double. Addie Scheurer went 1/2 and added a run, and Lily Sandborn went 2/4 and also added a run. Laynie Meredith finished the stat leaders with a double as well.

Game Two: 7-6 win

Bella Russman had her Varsity pitching debut and took the Shamrocks through 5 1/3 innings. Tori Sandborn came on and finished the game with great presence from the mound.  From the plate Rylee Scheurer went 3/4 and had 2 runs, Gracelyn Rockey went 2/3 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI’s, Hannah Weller went 2/4 and Lily Sandborn went 2/4 with 2 RBI’s.

Coaching Staff Comments:

As our opening day was delayed due to weather before Spring Break, we were excited to finally work through some of the skill sets we have been working on and developing. Tonight we worked hard and stayed aggressive at the plate and while we stranded many base runners this evening, we know that later in the season those runs will score through execution of our main game plan. There were many wins today including players accepting new roles on the team, good base running and aggressiveness on offense, we made some terrific defensive plays, and of course the night was topped off when Lily Sandborn scored Hannah Weller for a walk off hit. The come behind win in game two is very significant for the work we are planning on completing this year. Go Shamrocks!
