Shamrock men take big win from Fulton

After an up and down season, with many close losses, the Portland St. Patrick boys basketball team finally put together a full game and pulled out a victory over Fulton, winning 43-36.

Fulton jumped out in the first quarter, and beat the Shamrocks 10-5. St. Patrick was balanced, with Derec Fedewa and Braxton Teachworth both putting in a bucket and Brayden Simon scoring a free throw.

In the second quarter, the Shamrocks bounced right back, winning the quarter 11-8, but trailing 18-16 going into halftime. Brayden Simon was a work horse, scoring 8 points to lead St. Patrick.

After halftime, the Shamrocks and Pirates both found their offensive pace, with St. Patrick winning a close quarter, 16-15. Brayden Simon led the Shamrocks with 7 points, Cole Kinsman had 6 points, and Shane Cook had 5 points. This left Fulton leading 33-32 going into the final quarter.

In the 4th quarter, the Shamrocks locked down the Pirates on defense, only allowing 3 points in the final quarter, while scoring 11. Shane Cook led the Shamrocks with 5 points, and Alex Fedewa had 4 points.

Coach Curtis Meyers had a bunch to say about the tenacity of his players. "I am just really proud of how the guys responded after the slow start. With it being our 4th game in 5 days, I was a little worried about them being worn out and tired. I told them they had to did deep, and that is what they did. I cannot say enough about how they responded in the second half as well, we have been in a lot of close games this year and came up short. It was great to see them pull through and make winning plays at the end. We can definitely take a lot from this game as we move forward."

Offensive leaders were pretty balanced for the Shamrocks with Freshmen Brayden Simon scoring 18 points 8 rebounds and 1 steal. Shane Cook had 10 points 9 rebounds 1 steal and 5 assists, Cole Kinsman had 6 points 7 rebounds and 3 steals, Braxton Teachworth had 4 points 7 rebounds and 1 steal, and Alex Fedewa had 4 points 7 rebounds and 1 steal.

St. Patrick plays this Friday, February 25th away at Lansing Christian.
