Raiders 2-1 at the Pat Lowe Memorial Tournament in Coldwater over the weekend
On Saturday, The Portland Varsity Baseball Team traveled to Coldwater to kick off their season in the Pat Lowe Memorial Tournament. The Raiders finished the day 2-1.
In game one, the Raiders had some trouble keeping up with a very talented Grand Rapids South Christian team in an 8-0 loss to open their season. The Raider's offense started off with a 1st inning double from leadoff, Junior, Caden Thelen and then a 2nd inning single from Sophomore, Evan Thelen. Those were the only two recorded hits of the game. Left-handed pitcher, Marc Nobis, took the loss for the Raiders.
In game two of the tournament, the Raiders bats came alive recording 10 hits in 5 innings! They defeated the Three River Wildcats 10-0. Once again, Junior, Caden Thelen, led the offense going 4 -4 with a triple, double, and two singles. Junior, Marky Meyers, went 2-4, Senior, Brady Krause, was 2-2 and Freshman, Brody Moore, recorded his first varsity hit with a double. Caden Thelen recorded the win for the Raiders by allowing zero hits and striking out seven. Senior, Marc Nobis, and Freshman, Gunner Williams, also saw time on the mound.
In game three, Caden Thelen continued to stay clutch at the plate with runners on base, driving in 5 runs to seal a 13-6 victory over the Coldwater Cardinals. Junior, Marky Meyers, got the start for the Raiders on the mound. He allowed six hits while striking out six and walking one. The Raiders also saw pitching from Freshman, Gunner Williams, and Sophomore, Paul Roberts. Overall, the Raiders racked up 12 hits in the game. Caden Thelen was 3-5 with a double and two home runs. Evan Thelen went 2-3, Marc Nobis and Brady Krause also recorded two hits, while Brody Moore, Carson Martin, and Barrett Brennan, also added a hit.
“We saw a lot of positive things throughout the day,” said Coach Trierweiler. “All these teams we played had 5+ games under their belt. We have some young players starting in the field for us and some strong Senior leadership on the field and on the team, so we are excited to see this team get better and better each game.”
The Raiders were schedule to kick off league play against Charlotte on Tuesday April 18th but that game was postponed.
