Girls Soccer was back in action on Monday traveling to Lansing Everett High School. The Raiders got off to a fast start getting on the board just two minutes into play with a goal from Ashley Bower assisted by a pass from Molly Johnson. Everett was able to tie the game a few minutes later with a goal but that would be the only time they would score during the game as the Raiders turned up the intensity. Only a few minutes later Sami Rushin found the back of the net off a shot that bounced off the crossbar putting them up 2-1. Bower scored again for the Raiders putting them up 3-1 going into the second half. The ladies continued to control the flow of the game not allowing Everett any chances for another run at the goal. Sophomore Gussie Fedewa scored for the Raiders in the second half and the final score was 4-1.
The team took to the field Wednesday evening to wrap up CAAC White league play against local rival Ionia High School. The Raiders wasted no time getting on the scoreboard early with a goal by Ashley Bower in the opening five minutes of play. Bower would score again moments later on a pass from Sami Rushin to put the Raiders up 2-0. Portland would continue to dominate the game possessing the ball as Ionia struggled to put any pressure on the Raider defense. Gussie Fedewa would find the net on a breakaway run to goal. Moments later Maddie Luxmore would score from outside the 18 yard line to put the Raiders up 4-0 with twenty minutes left in the first half. The Portland offense would continue to control the game adding three more goals before the end of the half. Ashley Bower, Shaylyn Dziewiatkowski and Molly Johnson would all score before the end of the half. Maddie Luxmore scored the eight goal in the second half to end the game by mercy rule.
The team wrapped up play this week with an away game against Fowlerville Thursday evening. The Raiders jumped to early lead with goals by Ashley Bower and Maddie Luxmore in the first half of play. Portland continued to dominate in the second by keeping the ball in the Gladiators defensive half and creating lots of scoring opportunities. Bower would find the net three more times in the second half. Hannah Schrauben and Logan Wezensky would also add goals in the second half to put the final score at 7-0. Alicia Estell earned the shutout for the Raiders in goal.
Girls Varsity Soccer awaits the CAAC Cup draw results for next week's game assignments. They move to 9-4 on the season and have won 7 out of their last 8 games.
