Raider Football Falls to Cadillac


The Portland High School football team hosted the Vikings of Cadillac on Friday night. Portland entered the 6-1 after defeating Eaton Rapids 37-0 last week. Cadillac came into the game with a 5-2 record after defeating Petoskey 35-0 last week.


With a steady rain falling, Portland kicked off to Cadillac to start the game. On the first play from scrimmage, Portland senior Trent Meyers picked off the Viking pass, giving the Red Raiders the ball at the Cadillac 42.


Portland was able to push the ball inside the Viking five, but fumbled and the ball was recovered by Cadillac.


The Raider defense would eventually force Cadillac to punt.


The Portland offense would start on their own 31 with 4:09 remaining in the first. Portland would make a steady drive down the field, eventually scoring on a three-yard touch down run by senior quarterback Haden Getchell with 8:23 remaining in the second quarter. Senior kicker Madison would connect on the Point after and the Raiders would take a 7-0 lead.


Cadillac would start their possession at their own 35. The Viking were able to burn a great deal of clock while slowly driving the ball deep into Portland territory. With 1:12 left in the second quarter Cadillac would find the end zone on a three-yard run by senior Collin Johnston. Senior kicker Aden Gurden connected on the extra point making the score tied at seven.


At halftime the score remained seven a piece.


As the third quarter began the sky began to clear and the rain stopped, but the field remained sloppy and wet.


In the third quarter of play the team would exchange punts and neither team was able to score.


With 9:01 remaining in the game, Cadillac would take the lead on a field goal. With the ball on the Portland 13, and facing a 4th and five, senior Caden Windover would kick the ball through the uprights giving the Vikings a 10-7 lead.


The Portland offense would pick up some momentum on their next drive and drove the ball past midfield, but a Portland fumble was recovered by the Vikings at the Cadillac 42.


Cadillac was able to slowly run out the remaining 4:59 of the game to pick up a 10-7 victory.


Portland moves to 6-2 on the season. Their next game is the final game of the regular season and it is a home contest with Montague on Friday, October 22nd. Montague fell to Whitehall on Friday night by a score of 34-14, moving to 6-2 on the season.
