The Portland varsity bowlers recently traveled to Bay City for the Rusty Thomas Memorial Tournament, competing in a field of 80 male bowlers. Easton Pleyte finished 59th with a 151 average. Camden Calkins placed 49th with a 166 average, Tanner Brownell finished 44th with a 167 average and Zach Edlund had a strong showing, finishing 22nd with a 186 average.
Wyatt Spear qualified for match play after finishing second during qualifying. He started the day on fire, rolling games of 269 and 254 for a 523 two-game series—the highest two-game series in Portland bowling history. Wyatt won his first match and earned the top seed for the stepladder finals. He faced one of his best friends, Luke Meinz from Lapeer, in the championship match. Wyatt bowled an excellent game of 233 with zero open frames, however Luke rolled a 267. Wyatt finished in second place.
Four of the girls Savanah Sutton qualified for match play in 12th place with a six-game total of 962. The other girls—Keira Moffatt, Karagan Calley, and Sophia Pennington—bowled hard but were unable to climb above the cut line. Savanah lost her first match to a tough competitor from Davison.
Overall, it was a great day on the lanes for all of our Raider bowlers!
The Portland bowling teams hosted Lansing Catholic on Friday and came away with a strong sweep across all levels.
The Portland girls continued their impressive season, improving to 11–1 with a dominant 27–3 victory. Keira Moffatt led the way with a 339 two-game series, marking her third consecutive 300 series. Karagan Kalley added a strong performance with a 161 game as the girls delivered a well-rounded team effort.
The Boys varsity team also secured a win, defeating Lansing Catholic 24–6. Tanner Brownell led the charge with a 377 two-game series, his highest total of the season. Zach Edlund recorded the high game of the match with a 205. With the victory, the varsity boys improved their record to 8–3.
