Professor Templin Named 2021 Outstanding Educator, Portland’s Kayla Shaw Receives Scholarship

The Education and Research Foundation of the Association of General Contractors of America has selected Ferris State University Construction Technology and Management Professor Lee Templin as its 2021 Outstanding Educator.

Templin said he received this award because of his involvement with colleagues in the industry and his work to promote awareness and benefit students outside the classroom.

“I have been a member of the CTM faculty for 25 years and became faculty advisor for Associated Construction Students, a registered student organization, during my second term at Ferris,” Templin said. “The AGC of Michigan offers continuing education for professionals and students, so I make sure our student chapter takes part in their annual conference and can experience the training sessions. We have taken hundreds of students across the state to make connections and further their learning at the Association of General Contractors of America events over the years.”

Templin added, “One event, the Student Contractor Awareness Night is a great opportunity for those participants to discuss internships or get noticed by firms that can help establish them as professionals.”

Templin said he joins emeriti Professor Ed Brayton as the only Ferris recipients of the Outstanding Educator Award. A single instructor has received the national honor annually for 37 years.

“I am proud of the golf outing we host each year to support and develop our scholarship program,” Templin said. “I established this event and have developed a network of contractors who contribute prizes and sponsor holes so this can be a resource for students who need the financial backing to be on campus and become leaders in the construction management industry.”

As part of the award, Templin was provided two $2,500 scholarships to award to Construction Technology Management students. Kayla Shaw, of Portland, and Jared Conrad, of Grand Rapids, are the recipients. Templin will receive the Outstanding Educator Award at the Association of General Contractors of America 2021 Convention, set for Sept. 21-23 in Orlando.
