The Portland High School women’s soccer team completed a triumphant run through the CAAC Copper Cup this past week, earning the championship trophy with back-to-back victories over two familiar foes who had bested them earlier in the season.
In a gritty opening matchup against Olivet, the Raiders showed resilience and determination, edging out a 3-2 win in a hard-fought battle. Portland came out aggressive, matching Olivet’s intensity and showcasing a much-improved attack since their regular season meeting. Karagan Calley opened her tournament account with two goals while Raina Spitzley found the back of the net once to lift Portland past their league rival.
The championship match pitted Portland against Ionia in a highly anticipated rematch. Earlier in the season, Ionia had handed the Raiders a tough loss, but this time, Portland’s defense rose to the occasion, pitching a flawless shutout behind a stellar performance from goalkeeper Lex Foren. The backline remained composed under pressure and refused to yield, while the offense delivered when it mattered most. Lauren Spitzley continued her outstanding tournament performance by scoring both goals of the championship game to seal the 2-0 victory.
Across both matches, the Raiders showcased a well-rounded attack and disciplined defense. Calley finished the tournament with two goals, while Raina Spitzley contributed a goal and an assist. Lauren Spitzley led the charge with two goals and two assists, and Kate Kraczon added a pair of key assists to spark the offense.
The Copper Cup title is a statement win for the Raiders, who not only claimed the championship but also avenged two regular-season losses in the process. With momentum and confidence on their side, Portland looks poised for a strong finish to the season.
