Portland tops Sexton in Home Opener 29-13

The stadium filled up quickly with football-hungry fans this past Thursday night as the town of Portland was ecstatic for some Portland Raiders football. Portland took on league opponent Sexton early in the first quarter, but the Raiders struggled to open anything up offensively. It appeared that Sexton’s defensive line had their number.

Unfortunately for Sexton, the first quarter was about all they had going for them, as Portland dominated the next three quarters of the game. The Raiders’ offense totaled 337 yards on the ground but struggled to complete any of their three passing attempts.

Defensively, the Raiders absolutely turned it up in the second half, leaving Sexton with little to work with. Portland held Sexton to -29 rushing yards and 207 passing yards, along with two passing touchdowns.

Portland’s #7 senior Carson Spenski kept the crowd on their feet all night with his explosive running game, totaling 134 yards on the ground on 21 carries and scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Spenski arguably got robbed of a 53-yard touchdown after being called out of bounds.

It was a very dominant home opener for the Raiders, earning them a 29–13 victory.

Next week, Portland will take on Olivet at home in a league matchup. Olivet currently stands at 1–1, coming off a tough 43–21 loss to Division 6 opponent Clinton Redwolves and a very dominant 54–12 win against league opponent Lansing Catholic.

It should be a good test for both teams. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. on September 11 at Portland High School.
