Portland softball falls to Lakewood, tops PW, splits with Owosso in Buche Tournament




On Wednesday, the Raiders finished a game with Lakewood that was suspended due to weather back on April 23rd. 

 

Lakewood 12, Portland 9

Wednesday’s action resumed in the middle of the 4th inning with Portland leading 7-4.  Lakewood was the home team for this game.  The Vikings scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.  Lakewood would score two more in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead, but the Raiders score two in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 9-9.  Lakewood would put three more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth, but Portland was unable to bounce back.

 

Sophomore Claire Lyon went two for four with a home run and two RBIs.  Junior Bailee Fish went two for five with a double and an RBI.  Senior Jayden Townsend went two for four. 

 

 

On Wednesday, the Raiders also hosted Pewamo Westphalia for a single non-conference game.

 

Portland 22, PW 21

After the Pirates scored four runs in the top of the seventh, the Raiders trailed 21-19.  Portland tied things up in the bottom half of the seventh when Townsend hit a two-run home run over the centerfield fence.  A few plays later, junior Autumn Reffitt singled to bring in the winning run.


Sophomore Bella Spitzley went three for three with a triple and four RBIs.  Fish went three for five.  Sophomore Lilly Thelen went two for three with a double, a home run, and five RBIs.  Townsend went three for five with a double, a home run and three RBIs.  Sophomore Rylee Miller, junior Anastasia Seidelman, and sophomore Veda Smith had two hits each. 

 

Spitzley pitched the first six innings striking out four.  Townsend pitched the final inning and got the win for Portland. 

 

 

On Saturday the Portland squad hosted the 19th Annual Suzanne J. Buche Cancer Awareness tournament.  Due to unforeseen circumstances, the planned four team tournament ended up being a double header between Portland and Owosso.

 

Game 1: Portland 7, Owosso 3

Lyon led the Raider offense going two for four with two home runs and four RBIs.  Townsend went two for four with a home run, a double, and three RBIs.  Fish went two for three.  Thelen and junior Autumn Reffitt each had two hits for Portland.

 

Spitzley got the win in the circle while striking out four and holding Owosso to just six hits. 

 

Game 2: Owosso 14, Portland 12

Despite holding a six-run lead at one point, Owosso battled back to win the game.

 

Spitzley went two for four with a double and one RBI.  Fish went two for five.  Townsend went two for four with a double.  Reffitt and Seidelman each had a double in the game. 

 

Spitzley pitched the first three innings striking out one.  Townsend pitched the final three innings and took the loss on the mound while striking out one. 

 

 

The Raiders are now 20-8 on the season.  They will travel to Saranac on Tuesday for their final non-league contest of the regular season.  Portland will host districts next Saturday.  The Raiders will face Lakewood at 10:00.  Ionia and Hastings will face off at 12:00.  The championship game is scheduled for 2:00.  Tickets must be purchased on GoFan.co for MHSAA tournament games.
