Portland Softball drops two to Mason in season opener

The Portland High School varsity softball team kicked off the 2023 season on Tuesday when they hosted the Bulldogs of Mason.
Game 1: Mason 5, Portland 3
Junior pitcher Jayden Townsend pitched the complete game for Portland striking out six and walking just one.
Freshman Lilly Thelen, sophomore Bailey Fish, sophomore Autumn Reffitt and freshman Bella Spitzley each had two hits for Portland. Townsend and freshman Claire Lyon each added one hit.
Portland tallied 10 hits in the game, and despite scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh, fell to Mason 5-3.
Game 2: Mason 7, Portland 5
Freshman Bella Spitzley had her high school pitching debut in the second contest of the night. Spitzley struck out two and allowed one walk.
Townsend led the Raiders offensively with three hits including a double and a triple. Thelen had two hits, while Fish, Lyon Reffitt and Spitzley each had one hit.
This game went into extra innings with Mason scoring in the bottom of the eight to get the win.

The Raiders will host Thornapple Kellogg on Thursday night, and will host their first tournament of the year on Saturday.
