Portland Knights of Columbus Enrich Lives Through Service and Fellowship

The Portland Knights of Columbus continue to make a meaningful difference in the community through charitable service, fellowship, and a commitment to helping others.

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization. Founded in 1882 by American priest Father Michael McGivney, the organization empowers Catholic men to live their faith at home, in their parish, at work, and throughout their communities while serving those in need. The Knights are guided by four core principles: charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism.

Today, the organization includes more than two million members worldwide, with nearly 65,000 in Michigan alone. Portland Council #2168 is thriving, with 472 members and continuing to grow in both membership and community involvement.

One of the council's greatest strengths is its dedication to charitable service.

"Council #2168 hosts several charitable events each year that we take great pride in coordinating," said Grand Knight Doug Smith. "Two of our signature programs are the annual Tootsie Roll Drive and the Baby Items for Families in Need drives."

Held each October, the Tootsie Roll Drive raises funds to support people with intellectual disabilities. The event requires approximately 135 volunteers each year and has become one of the council's largest community service projects.

"Thanks to the generous support of our community, we raised approximately $7,500 last year," Smith said. "The proceeds benefit Special Olympics, Ionia Freedom Acres, and the Portland Public Schools Special Education program."

The council also conducts Baby Items for Families in Need donation drives twice a year, in January and June. Community members donate essential supplies such as diapers, wipes, infant formula, clothing, and car seats for families throughout Ionia County, including many in the Portland area. These donations help families facing financial hardship or other personal challenges.

"This year's drives were incredibly successful," Smith said. "We collected $3,200 in cash and approximately $3,750 worth of supplies. Many infants and children throughout Ionia County will be blessed by these donations."

In addition to charitable work, the Knights sponsor activities that bring people together and strengthen community connections.

"Our community service efforts also include Bingo twice a month on Sunday afternoons and Euchre twice a month on Wednesday afternoons during the fall and winter," Smith said. "These events are held at the Knights Hall and are especially popular with older adults, although everyone is welcome. They give people an opportunity to get out of the house, enjoy fellowship, and spend time with friends."

Another favorite tradition is the annual bus trip to Fire Keepers Casino. This year's day trip is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, with additional details to be announced.

"It's always a good time for everyone," Smith said.

The council also hosts popular rummage sales each April and October. Shoppers are invited to make a goodwill donation for their purchases, with proceeds supporting charitable causes throughout the community and beyond.

"These services are what the Knights are all about," Smith said. "We support our community through acts of charity and service. Being a Knight for the past 23 years has brought me great fulfillment as I've seen the impact this organization has on so many people. There's always a need to be filled in our community, and we want to help meet those needs. We want to make a difference in people's lives."
