When the 2025-2026 school year kicks off at Portland High School later this month, students will be under the leadership of a new building principal. Matt Morales has been selected to that role.
We recently reached out to Morales to try an learn a bit more about him.
When asked about his school administration experience, Morales said, “I’ve had a unique journey into education. Early in my career, I worked in the juvenile justice system, supporting teens who were at difficult points in their lives. That experience really shaped my understanding of what young people need, not just support, but someone who believes in them and helps them see what’s possible. It led me to pursue a career in education, where I felt I could make a difference earlier in a student’s life.”
Morales added, “I’m now entering my eighth year as a school administrator. I’ve had the chance to serve in both building and district level roles, first as Assistant Principal at East Lansing High School, and most recently as Director of Health and Safety for East Lansing Public Schools. Those experiences taught me how to support students and staff in meaningful, lasting ways. While I’m excited to bring those experiences to Portland, I’m even more excited to work with the students and staff who have already built such a strong foundation for learning here.”
When asked what he was most excited about in his new position at PHS, Morales said, “I’m genuinely excited to be part of Portland High School. Growing up in rural Dimondale, I experienced firsthand what it’s like to be part of a small-town school where relationships matter and the community truly supports its students. Portland has that same kind of tight knit, supportive atmosphere, and it’s clear how much pride people take in their school.”
He went on to say, “What excites me most is the chance to build meaningful relationships with students, staff, and families, and to support and strengthen the great work already happening here. I’m also looking forward to continuing to learn from the people who know this school best and to building on the strong foundation of care and connection. I’m honored to be part of that.”
When asked what he thought the biggest challenge in this new role would be, Morales stated, “Any time you step into a new school, the first challenge is learning the culture and understanding what matters most to the people who are already part of the community. That’s something I take seriously. I want to listen, be present, and build trust by showing up consistently. I believe the best leadership is done alongside people, not ahead of them.”
When asked if there was anything else he would like to share with Beacon readers, Morales said, “Just how grateful I am to be here. Portland High School already has so much to be proud of, and I’m excited to contribute to its continued growth. My focus will always be on what’s best for students, helping them feel safe, supported, and ready for life after high school. I’m honored to be part of this community and can’t wait to get started.”
When asked about Morales joining the district, Superintendent Will Heath said, “We’re excited to welcome Matt to our team. He brings valuable experience at both the building and central office levels, and throughout the interview process, he consistently demonstrated a people-first approach to leadership. We’re confident he will be a great fit for our high school and the community.”
