Portland Football Wins Regional Title


On Friday night, the Portland High School football team hosted the Kalamazoo United Titans for the MHSAA Division V Regional Championship.


Both teams were held scoreless in the first quarter of play.


In the second quarter of play, United drove the ball deep in to Raider territory. The Portland defense forced he Titans to fumble, which was recovered by Portland senior Ethan Patrick at the Portland seven-yard line. The Raider offense would march the ball down the field. The drive was capped off by a one-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Haden Getchell. Senior kicker Madison Luxmore would connect on the extra point and Portland would take a 7-0 lead with 6:27 remaining in the second quarter.


Neither team would score for the remainder of the second quarter and the Raiders would take their 7-0 lead into halftime.


The Portland defense would be challenged multiple times in the third quarter of play. They stopped the Titans on a 4th and goal at the Portland seven-yard line, and also caused a United fumble which was recovered by Portland at the Raider three.


In the final quarter of play, the Raiders would score once again when Getchell punched it again from two-yards out, capping off a 71-yard drive. Luxmore’s point after was good and Portland extended their lead to 14-0 with 7:36 remaining in the game.


After the Portland defense stopped the Titans on a fourth and short situation, the Raider offense would start at the United 25. One play later, Portland senior running back Reis Phillips broke free for a 20-yard touchdown run. Luxmore’s extra point was good and with only 5:49 remaining in the game, Portland was up 21-0.


Portland was able to manage the clock well for the remainder of the game to secure a 21-0 Regional Championship victory.

The Raiders advance to face Marine City in the Division V Semi-Finals. That match-up is now scheduled for Saturday, November 20th at 1:00 at Novi High School.


The Mariners of Marine City are a perfect 12-0 on the season after defeating Corunna 21-14 in their Regional Final. According to MHSAA.com, here is a look at Marine City’s 2021 schedule with results.



The winner of Portland and Marine City will face the winner of Frankenmuth and GR Catholic Central in the Division V State Finals on Saturday, November 27th at 4:30 PM at Ford Field in Detroit.
