With a beautifully remodeled clubhouse and significant improvements throughout the golf course, Portland Country Club has emerged as one of the area's premier destinations for great golf, outstanding dining, and community fellowship.
"Westphalia resident Paul Trierweiler, along with his sons Kyle and Josh, purchased the club in July 2024, and they began making improvements almost immediately," said Golf Course Manager Bill Hengesbach. "In the spring of 2025, we removed 250 aging trees and repaired the irrigation system. We renovated the barn, reseeded the fairways, and we're currently adding bunkers to the first, tenth, and eighteenth holes. These enhancements will not only improve the course's beauty but also provide golfers with a more challenging and enjoyable experience."
The response from members has been overwhelmingly positive.
"Our members are extremely pleased with what we've accomplished so far," Bill said. "They love the improvements to the course and are especially impressed with the transformation of the clubhouse."
The clubhouse itself has become a destination worth visiting. In addition to offering a welcoming dining room and full-service bar, the facility features a spacious banquet room available for parties, meetings, and other special events.
"We've created an exciting new menu with the help of our talented chef, Dan Lyon," Bill said. "Dan serves as both clubhouse manager and chef, and he has done an outstanding job developing a menu that our guests truly enjoy."
The club is also investing in the next generation of golfers.
"We'll be hosting a Junior Golf Camp during the week of July 13," Bill said. "The camp will be led by Sarah Honswitz, head coach of the Portland High School girls golf team. Both boys and girls are welcome to attend. Participants will learn the fundamentals of the game from a skilled instructor in a fun and supportive environment."
Bill takes great pride in the work completed by the Trierweiler family, Dan Lyon, and the entire staff.
"It really is a beautiful golf club again," he said. "We've made countless improvements and restorations, all with the goal of creating a place where people can gather, enjoy the game, and build lasting memories for generations to come."
