Portland Baseball splits with Mason, Sweeps Ionia

The Portland High School baseball moved to 7-1 on the season after splitting with Mason on Saturday, and sweeping Ionia on Tuesday.

 

Game 1: Portland 7, Mason 4

 

Portland Raiders Defeat Mason 7th ranked Mason. Portland Varsity Raiders were victorious against Mason 7-4 on Saturday in the first game.

 

The Raiders got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after H Hendrickson induced Max Sandborn to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored, and Tyler Smith doubled, scoring two runs. Portland added to their early lead in the bottom of the second inning after Barrett Brennan hit a sacrifice fly, and Brody Moore singled down the left field line, each scoring one run.

 

Sandborn earned the win for the Raiders. The right-handed pitcher gave up four hits and two runs (zero earned) over five innings, striking out one and walking one. Hendrickson took the loss for Mason. The starter went one and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on five hits, striking out one and walking three. Mason Vallier appeared in relief for Portland Varsity Raiders.

AJ Weber and Moore each collected two hits and Smith and Vallier each drove in two runs for Portland.

 

 

Game 2: Mason 9, Portland 7

 

The Raiders Make a Run Against Mason but Fall Short

 

Despite a 5-run deficit in the second inning, Portland Varsity almost came all the way back, eventually falling 9-7 to Mason on Saturday. The Raiders closed the gap.

 

Portland lost despite out-hitting Mason 11 to five. Evan Thelen, Hudson Martin, Barrett Brennan, and Brody Moore each collected two hits for Portland.

 

The Raiders were the first to get on the board in the first when Thelen singled, scoring one run. Mason flipped the game on its head in the top of the second, scoring six runs on one hit to take the lead, 6-1. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by J Bolton that drove in one. Thelen doubled to center field, which helped Portland tie the game at seven in the bottom of the sixth. A sacrifice fly by J Schild gave Mason the lead, 9-7, in the top of the seventh.

 

W Ball earned the win for Mason. The reliever surrendered zero hits and zero runs over one inning, striking out three and walking none. Mason Vallier pitched three and one-third innings in relief for Portland Varsity Raiders. The reliever gave up one hit and one run while striking out none and walking one. Brennan took the loss for Portland. The pitcher went two and two-thirds innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on three hits, striking out none and walking one.


Portland piled up 11 hits in the game. Thelen and Moore were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for Portland. The Raiders ran wild on the base paths, piling up five stolen bases for the game.

 

Game 1: Portland 3, Ionia 1

 

Portland Varsity Raiders Defeats Ionia in Pitcher's Duel

 

Both teams were strong on the bump on Tuesday, but Portland defeated Ionia 3-1. Evan Thelen started the game for Portland and recorded 18 outs.

 

The Raiders were the first to get on the board in the first when Thelen singled, scoring one run. A play extended the Raiders lead to 2-0 in the top of the third inning.

 

Thelen earned the win for Portland Varsity Raiders. The starting pitcher gave up two hits and one run (zero earned) over six innings, striking out nine and walking two. Piercefield took the loss for Ionia. The hurler went six innings, surrendering two runs on five hits, striking out six and walking three. Paul Roberts collected the save.

 

Thelen drove the middle of the lineup, leading Portland Varsity Raiders with two runs batted in. The 3-hole hitter went 2-for-4 on the day. Thelen and Barrett Brennan each collected two hits for Portland Varsity Raiders. AJ Weber stole two bases.

 

 

Game 2: Portland 4, Ionia 1

 

Portland Varsity Raiders Defeat Ionia Behind Strong Performance from Paul Roberts

 

Paul Roberts was dominant on the hill, as the starter rang up 12 strikeouts in Portland Raider's 4-1 victory over Ionia on Tuesday. Roberts surrendered one hit and one run over seven innings while walking two. Ionia got on the board in the first inning after Roundtree singled, scoring one run. Portland took the lead in the top of the fifth inning after Gunnar Williams singled down the right field line, and Mason Vallier laid down a sacrifice bunt, each scoring one run.


Miller took the loss for Ionia. The hurler went seven innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on seven hits, striking out six and walking two.


Number eight hitter, Williams, showed the depth of Portland’s lineup, by leading them with two hits in three at bats.
