Veteran leadership shined as the MHSAA Boys Wrestling Season opened, with the Raiders returning ten wrestlers to this year’s roster—including six state qualifiers and five state placers from last season.
The Raiders hosted the Holt Rams in their season-opening dual on Wednesday, December 3rd. Sophomore Grady Lanz (113) set the tone early, recording the quickest pin of the night in just 35 seconds. The evening also marked milestone victories for two newcomers: Freshman Easton Hinds (106) and Freshman Braiden Wiborn (144), who each captured their first career varsity wins.
The Raiders closed out the night with a dominant team performance, taking the dual by a final score of 60–13.
Portland Wrestling secured its home tournament title on Saturday, going undefeated on the day. Led by senior captains Brad Meyers (190) and Gunnar Williams (285), the Raiders put together a dominant showing with six wrestlers finishing the event unbeaten. Joining the captains with perfect records were Easton Hinds (106), Branlun Simon (120), Landon Lanz (126), and Landon Guilford (215).
The tournament’s quickest fall came from Gunnar Williams, who delivered a 15-second pin, electrifying the home crowd and setting the tone for a strong team performance.
