The Portland boys wrestling team had a standout week, highlighted by a thrilling 35–34 victory over Division 2’s No. 6 ranked Eaton Rapids. The narrow win was a true team effort, with several wrestlers stepping up in key moments.
Coach Pulling recognized Griffin Opperman (150) for his hard work in securing crucial bonus points with a technical fall, and Grady Lanz (106), who sealed both his match and the dual victory with a late takedown, winning with just 15 seconds remaining in the third period.
The Raiders carried that momentum into Saturday’s Todd Stern Invitational at Leslie High School, returning home with the team championship. Portland crowned four individual champions: Grady Lanz (106), Branlun Simon (120), Brad Meyers (190), and Landon Guilford (285), all winning highly competitive brackets.
Simon (120) and Meyers (190) remain unbeaten on the season. Gunnar Williams (215) and Griffin Opperman (157) earned runner-up finishes, while Drew Feldpausch (132) and Braiden Wiborn (138) placed fifth. Landon Espinoza (165) and Jack Reffitt (175) rounded out the scoring with sixth-place finishes.
Congratulations to Brad Meyers who was selected as the PFCU Raider of the Month. The Senior standout is currently 37-0 with 147 career varsity wins and is currently ranked 3rd in the State for Division 2 by Michigan Grappler.
The Raiders return to action on February 4 as they close out CAAC White competition against Charlotte before taking on Grand Ledge. Portland remains unbeaten in the CAAC White Division heading into the final week of the regular season.
Looking ahead to the postseason, the team will compete in team districts on Wednesday, February 11, at DeWitt High School, where they will face the winner of DeWitt and St. Johns. With strong performances across the lineup, the Raiders are optimistic about continued success as the postseason approaches.
