The May 26th Portland Area Historical Society meeting will begin at 6:30 PM at the Senior Service Building at 144 Kent Street. The program for this meeting will be “An Evening with Patrick Henry”.
This first-person dramatic re-enactment is a creative and engaging presentation that traces the major events, words, and reflections of this remarkable patriot’s life and times, told as if by Henry, himself.
Patrick Henry (1736–1799) was a prominent American Founding Father, celebrated orator, and attorney from Virginia known for his radical opposition to British rule and advocacy for individual rights. After early failures in business, he gained fame as a lawyer and representative for his legal victory in the “Parsons’ Cause,” 1765 Stamp Act challenges, and his fiery “Give me liberty, or give me death” speech in 1775, which helped rally colonies toward revolution. Serving as the first and sixth Governor of Virginia, he later became a leading Anti-Federalist, opposing the initial U.S. Constitution that lacked a declaration of rights, and therefore influenced the creation of the Bill of Rights.
