It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Virginia “Ellen” Hager, who left us peacefully on August 2, 2025, just one month shy of her 82nd birthday. Ellen was a joyful and adventurous soul, whose vibrant spirit touched the lives of all who knew her.

She was born on September 2, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Grand Ledge, Michigan, where she developed a deep love for family, nature, and life’s simple pleasures. She found happiness in travel, camping, and boating—activities that created countless cherished memories with those closest to her.

Ellen and her beloved husband, Lawrence “Norm” Hager, shared 26 wonderful years of marriage filled with laughter, love, and shared adventures. Together, they enjoyed dividing their time between Michigan and Florida, especially treasuring their time in Tarpon Springs, FL and at Southshore Campground in Crystal, MI. Eventually, they made Portland, Michigan their full-time home, continuing to make beautiful memories and enjoying trips to Florida during the winter months.

Ellen’s greatest joy was her family. She delighted in hosting and attending family gatherings—birthdays, weddings, holidays—where her warmth, humor, and genuine love brought everyone together. She will be remembered for her generous heart, infectious smile, and the legacy of love she leaves behind.

Ellen is survived by her loving husband, Norm Hager; her children: Edward Wawiernia, Mark Wawiernia, Stephanie (Jeff) Florian, Lori (Mike) Odle, and Mike (Laura) Hager; grandchildren: Nicholas Wawiernia, Brittany Wawiernia, Tyler (Tory) Pierce, Ally Florian, Kayla Florian, Nicole (Jimmy) Hissong, Katie (Kyle) Strobridge, Ella Hager, Savanna Hager, and Griffin (Kelsey) Hager; and her treasured great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Alexa, Chase, Caiden, Elijah, Benson, William, Michael, Baby Pierce (due in October), Everett, Autumn, Jameson, and Layla. She is also survived by her brother, LaVone “Butch” Swanson; her brother- and sister-in-law, Richard and Sharon Hager; and her brother-in-law, Rod Reed.

Ellen’s vibrant spirit, unwavering love for her family, and zest for life will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Donations may be made to Hospice House of Mid Michigan.

A celebration of Ellen’s life will take place on Friday, August 8, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the VFW Hall, 1324 E. Bridge Street, Portland, MI.
